Continental Tyres Sprints Competition
The Continental Tyres Sprints competition at the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic will provide a competition within the main race for the 150 pro male riders taking part in the event. The Sprints competition involves a series of sprints within the race. Points are awarded to the first four cyclists who make it over the sprint line each time they pass it.
A sign 1km before the sprint line indicates to the riders that the sprint line is coming up. A line on the road and a gantry will indicate the sprint line.
There are five opportunities to obtain points in the Continental Tyres Sprints competition. In 2017 there was a sprint line on Dorking High Street, as the cyclists pass through this section of the route four times. The fifth and final sprint was located as the cyclists passed through Wimbledon.
Prize money is awarded to the first three cyclists who cross the sprint line each time.
The Continental Tyres Sprint title will be awarded to the cyclist who has received the most points after all five sprints.
|Across the line||Points awarded|
Matteo Trentin was the sprints champion with eight points, whilst five riders were tied for second place with five points each. Matthias Brandle was awarded 2nd place because he was the highest placed rider across the race Finish Line.
In the event of a tie in a sprints competition within single day race, the highest placed rider across the race Finish Line is awarded the higher position, rather than the rider who achieved points in more of the sprint stages.
