Brompton Bicycle, the manufacturer of the iconic folding bike, announced today that the 12th Brompton World Championship Final will take place on Saturday 29 July 2017 as part of Prudential RideLondon, the world’s greatest festival of cycling.
This is the third time the Brompton World Championship Final has been part of the Mayor of London’s cycling festival. Last year more than 450 riders from 24 different countries took part in a race that saw thousands watching in St James’s Park. Last year’s race featured a star-studded line-up including retired international cyclists David Millar and Michael Hutchinson plus a team of BBC correspondents.
The 2017 Brompton World Championship final is open to all with a limit of 575 places. The entry system for the ballot is now open at www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk/brompton and will close at 17:00 on 6 February 2017. The entry fee is £50.00. The ballot will be drawn after the closing date and successful riders will be notified of the ballot results by 13 February 2017.
The Brompton World Championship begins with a Le Mans-style mad dash to unfold bikes before taking on the 1.3 mile circuit which starts and finishes on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace. Sportswear is not permitted and there is a strict “no Lycra” rule.
Qualifying events are held in 12 countries and the fastest male and female from each of the qualifying events is awarded a place in the World Championship Final in London.
Will Butler-Adams, CEO of Brompton, commented: “London takes back its city over the RideLondon weekend, families crowd the streets, the air is fresh and sounds of happiness replace the drone of traffic. The highlight of course is the Brompton World Championships where the finest athletes are flown in from around the world and over five hundred race up The Mall to adoring crowds. The bikes are rapid, the start is Le Mans and there is no Lycra in sight! Cycling is for everyone, it brings freedom, fun and should reclaim it's place in the city.”
Earlier in the day, Brompton will also be hosting a large bike demonstration area and giving participants a chance to try a Brompton as part of Prudential RideLondon FreeCycle.
