Froome headlines strongest ever Classic field

The 2016 Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic has attracted its strongest ever field – spearheaded by Tour de France champion Chris Froome.

Froome, who is making his Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic debut, won the Yellow Jersey and two stages at this year’s Tour de France and he is one of a host of riders who starred at the Tour to make the short hop across the Channel.

In total winners of five stages of this year’s Tour will be on the Start Line of the Classic, which is the richest one-day race in the world.

As well as Froome (Team Sky), Michael Matthews (Orica-BikeExchange), Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) and Steve Cummings (Dimension Data) all picked up famous stage wins during the three-week race.

Cummings and Froome are also two of four members of the Great Britain Olympic road race team to ride the Classic, with Team Sky duo Geraint Thomas and Ian Stannard – who both helped Froome win the Yellow Jersey – also competing.

Defending champion Jean-Pierre Drucker (BMC Racing) will be back looking to defend his title while 2014 winner Adam Blythe will be racing for the first time since beating Mark Cavendish to win the British road race title.

Blythe is part of the strongest Great Britain team to compete in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic. He will be joined by British time-trial champion Alex Dowsett and up-and-coming sprint star Dan McLay who has just completed his first Tour de France.

Also on the Start Line will be former world champion Tom Boonen who is part of a very strong Etixx-Quick-Step team.

In total there are seven UCI WorldTour teams taking part: Team Sky, BMC Racing, Lotto Soudal, Etixx-Quick-Step, Team Dimension Data, Orica-BikeExchange and Cannondale Drapac.

British outfit One Pro Cycling are one of a number of UCI ProContinental teams looking to spring a surprise while there are seven UCI Continental teams that include Sir Bradley Wiggins’ squad Team Wiggins.

There is also the first appearance in Europe for the Rwanda national team who will be warming up for an appearance at the Rio Olympics.
