Five tips to bounce back after injury

From annoying niggles to full blown falls, no cyclist wants to be injured. It can put a complete stop to your training and potentially ruin your plans for the coming months. But, every now and again, accidents happen. Follow these five top tips to bounce back next time you’re injured.

1. Understand your injury

The first step to take when you’re injured is to find out exactly what the problem is. Sometimes it may be an annoying niggle thats turned into something bigger and other times it may be an incident, which results in a painful injury, but it’s important to get proper medical advice.

2. Figure out what went wrong

Take a little time to reflect on why you were injured in the first place. One of the best things about being injured (although you may not see it as a blessing at the time) is the opportunity to learn. For example, if your incorrect bike set-up has caused pain, consider a professional bike fit.

3. Get advice on how to proceed

Once you understand your prognosis, work with a medical professional to put together a rehab plan. It’s important that you don’t just jump back into your training plan as this will not give your body the time it needs to repair and rebuild itself. In the long run, you’ll definitely be doing more harm than good.

4. Incorporate the Wattbike into your rehab programme

Many top athletes, including track cyclist Joanna Rowsell and boxer Anthony Crolla, have used the Wattbike as a rehab tool after injury.

Say you’ve injured your collarbone – a common occurrence in the world of cycling - you can use the Wattbike to keep on top of your fitness. The stability of the Wattbike means you won’t have the risks of wobbling or falling, as you would with rollers or on your bike outdoors.

If you’ve been unlucky enough to injure your lower body, the Wattbike Polar View can really help you discover the impact of your injury. The Polar View gives a graphical representation of your pedalling technique and right/left leg balance, which you can use to ensure you get back to full fitness fast.

5. Don’t give up!

A key aspect of bouncing back after an injury is all about attitude. If you keep a positive attitude, you’re likely to feel tons better after a few short weeks following your rehab plan. Depending on the severity of your injury, you may need to reevaluate your goals for the year, but once you come out the other side, it’ll all be worth it!
